With no interest in art while in school and zero artistic background, as a young woman Engel enrolled in a ceramics class; and, as the saying goes, “the rest is history.” Within weeks the shop owner asked her to come to work, and Engel began a series of seminars and certification classes to learn everything she could about products, concepts, skills and terminology related to ceramic art. Three years later, she found herself competing in shows with professional ceramicists. Competition was stiff for the best-in-show professional division award; nevertheless, this relative newcomer earned the coveted Peggy Award … the highest honor for a professional ceramicist … in back-to-back years! She was hooked! Encouraged by her cousin, Engel has since added glassware to her line of ceramic platters and bowls. “When painting fish, my husband is my advisor, and he thinks I’m picky!” Commissioned by several galleries and gift stores, Engel remains humble, saying “I am thankful and grateful to the Lord that I am able to do what I do.”
